Dhaka: Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus has expressed his delight over the decision to repair and re-launch the century-old BIWTC paddle steamer PS Mahsud as a pleasure cruise. "Our heritage must not be lost," the Chief Adviser stated when Shipping Adviser Brigadier General (Retd) Dr M Sakhawat Hussain briefed him about the initiative at the State Guest House Jamuna.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Chief Adviser's Special Envoy on International Affairs Lutfey Siddiqi, Shipping Secretary Dr Nurun Nahar Chowdhury, and Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Corporation (BIWTC) Chairman Md Salim Ullah were present at the meeting, as confirmed by a press release from the Chief Adviser's Press Wing. During the meeting, Professor Yunus emphasized the importance of preserving Bangladesh's diverse boat designs, which are renowned worldwide, and ensuring the younger generation is aware of this heritage.
BIWTC officials are optimistic that the re-launched paddle steamer will become a major attraction for both domestic and international tourists. The planned pleasure cruise aims to offer traditional Bangladeshi cuisine, live Bangla music, and other cultural experiences. The steamer is expected to operate seven days a week, offering both five-hour journeys and shorter two- to three-hour trips for visitors.
Welcoming the initiative, the Chief Adviser suggested that the traditional paddle steamers should display their history to educate passengers about the vessel's origins, historical fares, and associated stories. This historical narrative should be beautifully presented to enhance the experience.
Sakhawat Hussain noted that the PS Mahsud is not just a vessel but a living symbol of Bangladesh's riverine culture and heritage. He expressed the desire for the younger generation to witness firsthand the pivotal role rivers once played in the country's communication and culture. Hussain also mentioned plans to repair other old steamers, including PS Ostrich and PS Lepcha, and the possibility of launching a similar pleasure steamer service on Kaptai Lake in Chattogram.
According to BIWTC officials, special educational cruises may be organized for school and college students on special occasions to enable young people to experience and learn about Bangladesh's invaluable heritage.
