Dhaka: Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus today asked the police officials to perform their ‘historic responsibilities’ in the upcoming polls as he exchanged views with Superintendents of Police (SPs) from 64 districts and senior police officials at his office here.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Chief Adviser Prof Yunus emphasized the significance of the upcoming elections, describing them as an opportunity to establish a societal code that would guide the nation for the next hundred years. He urged police officials to act with professionalism and utmost sincerity, highlighting the importance of creating a strong code that withstands challenges, likening it to building codes followed after earthquakes.
Prof Yunus explained that the elections are not just traditional five-year polls but include a referendum, which he described as a “building code” for the nation. He encouraged the officials to view their roles as pivotal in creating this societal framework, which would be a legacy for future generations.
The chief adviser also addressed concerns regarding recent postings of SPs, reassuring that these were made randomly to avoid bias and urging officials to embrace these changes for the nation’s greater good. The event saw participation from Home Adviser Lt. Gen. (Retd) Md Jahangir Alam Chowdhury and Home Secretary Nasimul Ghani, among others.
Inspector General of Police (IGP) Baharul Alam, who conducted the meeting, reiterated the transformative potential of the elections. Prof Yunus emphasized the importance of presenting a free, fair, and peaceful election to the world, aiming to set an example for other nations.
Highlighting the elections as post-uprising polls, he connected them to the ideals and dreams of those who participated in the July Uprising. Prof Yunus emotionally recalled Shaheed Shahriar Khan Anas, a young student who sacrificed his life, urging officials to carry forward his vision and not remain idle like, as he mentioned, a coward.
The Chief Adviser called on the police to work creatively and competitively, promising awards for outstanding performance. He urged them to take Anas’s letter, written to his mother before joining the uprising, as inspiration for their duties in the coming months.
Chattogram Metropolitan Police Commissioner Hasib Aziz and Superintendents of Police Yasmin Khatun and Dr. Chowdhury Mohammad Jaber Sadek also spoke at the meeting, which was attended by various advisers of the interim government.
