Bumper mango production likely in Rangpur region

Officials of the Department of

Agricultural Extension (DAE) and farmers as well are expecting a bumper mango

production as formation of tender fruits continues smoothly now in Rangpur

agriculture region.

The DAE officials said the process of tender fruit formation is

progressing well in orchards amid favorable climatic conditions across the

region.

Meanwhile, farmers have engaged maximum efforts in nursing the growing

tender mango fruits in all five districts of Rangpur, Gaibandha, Kurigram,

Lalmonirhat and Nilphamari in the region.

Talking to BSS, farmer Azizar Rahman of village Sankarpur Mistripara of

Badarganj upazila in Rangpur said tender mangoes are growing fabulously in

his orchard on 5.50 acres of land where he has been cultivating the fruit for

the last 14 years.

“Farmers have mostly cultivated high yielding varieties of mangoes like

‘Haribhanga’, ‘Mohanbhog’, ‘Lengra’, ‘Gourmoti’, BARI-4, ‘Chandramollika’,

‘Lakhna’, ‘Gopalbhog’, ‘Amrapali’, ‘Khirshapati’ and other popular varieties

this season,” Rahman said.

Farmer Mukul Shah of village Chand Kuthirdanga in Badarganj upazila said

he has been cultivating a highly tasty, popular, fibreless and local

indigenous variety of ‘Haribhanga’ mango in his orchards on 13 acres of land

for the last 15 years.

“I am happy as tender fruits are growing excellently in the trees on my

orchard now,” he said, and hoped to eventually get a bumper production of the

fruit this season.

Farmer Abdur Rahman, Jahangir Alam and Solaiman Ali of village Jarullapur

Bakultala in Mithapukur upazila here said they have cultivated ‘Haribhanga’

mango in orchards with eight to 12 acres of land areas.

Farmer Abdul Halim of Rangatipara village in Mithapukur upazila said he

has been cultivating highly profitable ‘Hatibandha’ mango in his orchard on

10 acres of land for the last 14 years.

“I hope to earn a net profit of Taka 14 lakh excluding all farming costs

after selling the matured mangoes in May and June next,” Halim added.

Orchard owners Amjad Hossain of Tekani and Abdur Rahim of Paikarerhat

villages in Mithapukur upazila of Rangpur are hoping that excellent budding

followed by smooth formation of tender fruits would lead to a bumper mango

production.

Tauhidul Ikbal said around 95 percent of mango trees bloomed this season in

the region.

Farmers have cultivated mangoes on around 8,000 hectares of land during

the current season in the region where around 90,000 tonnes of the fruit is

being produced annually worth Taka 350 on an average.

“Field level agriculture officials are assisting farmers to take proper

care of the growing tender mangoes and control pests’ attacks, if any, during

this fruit formation period for better production,” he added.

Talking to BSS, Senior Coordinator (Agriculture and Environment) of RDRS

Bangladesh Mamunur Rashid lauded the DAE officials for assisting farmers to

take proper care of growing tender mangoes.

“If the climatic conditions, fluctuation in temperatures, attack by pests

and insects remained within tolerable limits during the next few months,

formation of mango would be smooth to yield a bumper production,” Rashid

hoped.
