Dhaka: BNP acting Chairman Tarique Rahman today declared that the BNP is advocating for national elections as it is committed to the principles of democracy and governance by the people. While virtually addressing the Cumilla City BNP’s biennial council at the Town Hall ground, he emphasized, “Since we believe in people’s rule, and democracy, naturally we will seek elections. We will seek votes from the people, we will seek elections within the country.”
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Tarique Rahman raised concerns about the potential delay in national elections, questioning who would benefit from such a delay. He criticized the ousted Awami League regime, accusing it of damaging the country’s economic, judicial, agricultural, educational, health, and electoral systems, along with other state structures.
Rahman highlighted the necessity of restoring stability to advance the nation and expressed hope that the interim government would facilitate a fair national election to reinforce democratic practices. “We hope that they will maintain the neutrality that people expect from the government,” he added, emphasizing the importance of unity and caution against conspiracies.
The biennial council was presided over by City BNP convener Udbatul Bari Abu, and it featured speeches from several BNP leaders, including Vice-Chairman Barkat Ullah Bulu and Cumilla divisional organizing secretary Principal Selim Bhuiyan, among others. The council concluded with the unopposed election of Udbatul Bari Abu as president, Yusuf Molla Tipu as general secretary, and Rajiur Rahman Rajib as organizing secretary of the Cumilla City BNP.
