Rajshahi: After a significant 17-year hiatus, the biennial council of the Rajshahi city unit of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) is scheduled to take place at the Zila Parishad auditorium on Sunday. BNP’s Acting Chairman, Tarique Rahman, is anticipated to address the council meeting virtually as the chief guest.

According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, excitement is palpable among BNP leaders and workers in anticipation of the council. The city has been adorned with banners, festoons, and posters, with the main roads and crossings vividly displaying party colors. The local party office has been similarly decorated with flags and illuminated for the occasion.

To commemorate the council, the local BNP unit organized a press conference at its Malopara office. Valiant Freedom Fighter Abdus Salam, an advisory council member to the BNP Chairperson and Rajshahi divisional coordinator, presented a statement. He emphasized the ongoing efforts to rejuvenate the city unit from the grassroots level, following directives from Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman. Salam highlighted the successful completion of community, ward, and thana-level councils, which have fostered new leadership to bolster the party’s organizational structure.

Salam noted that the council represents more than an organizational formality; it promises to inject fresh energy into upcoming political activities. He expressed optimism that the new city BNP leadership will play a pivotal role in future movements and election preparations.

Local BNP leaders, including Advocate Shafiqul Haque Milon, Advocate Ershad Ali Isha, Nazrul Huda, and Mamun-or-Rashid, attended the press event. Advocate Shafiqul Haque Milon remarked that the council will unite BNP members, councilors, and delegates from seven thana and 35 ward committees, transforming the event into a festive gathering. He asserted that the BNP, having moved past previous discord, stands united. Milon also criticized the Awami League for its alleged repression of BNP members and the numerous legal cases filed against them.
