Dhaka: Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has addressed a comprehensive letter to Chief Adviser Dr. Muhammad Yunus, articulating the party’s position on the current political climate in the country and proposing urgent actions.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the letter, titled ‘Opinions and suggestions on some urgent matters to be done in the prevailing situation in the country’, highlights BNP’s call for the end of the Awami League’s governance and outlines the need for governmental change through public uprising observed in July-August 2024. The correspondence, handed over to the chief adviser at the State Guest House Jamuna, emphasizes the severe toll on opposition members over the past 16 years, with over 1700 individuals reported as victims of enforced disappearances, more than a thousand killed, and millions affected by legal and physical harassment.
BNP underscores its historical commitment to democracy and human rights, affirming its support for the interim government led by Prof Yunus. The party expressed a willingness to cooperate fully with the interim administration to deliver the aspirations of the 2024 uprising, aiming to prosecute crimes against humanity and corruption, stabilize economic conditions, and ensure a fair electoral process.
The letter criticizes theories that prioritize development before democracy, arguing instead for democratic reforms as a prerequisite for sustainable development. BNP cites its history of significant reforms, like the 19-point program of Shaheed President Ziaur Rahman and the Vision-2030 of Begum Khaleda Zia, emphasizing their ongoing commitment to state reform.
BNP lamented the lack of discussion on previously raised concerns and highlighted issues related to the non-posting of 764 officials promoted by the interim government. The party called for coherent communication from the government, expressing concern over recent inconsistent statements by government representatives.
Ultimately, the BNP urged the Chief Adviser to announce an electoral roadmap swiftly, aiming for national elections by December. The party proposed placing the NID project under the Election Commission and resolving legal issues surrounding constituency delimitation.
In conclusion, BNP appealed for quick reforms and a clear electoral roadmap to dispel public uncertainty and restore democratic rights, emphasizing the necessity of addressing past injustices and improving the nation’s socio-economic conditions.
