Munshiganj: The country today witnessed the formal launching of an institute, first of its kind, for dredging with a primary goal to train workers to maintain navigability of rivers in the deltaic terrain. Shipping Adviser retired brigadier general Dr. M Sakhawat Hussain inaugurated the Institute as an academy under Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Authority (BIWTA) at Shimulia of Munshiganj on the outskirts of the capital.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the adviser emphasized the necessity of the institute, pointing out that various government and non-government agencies require continuous dredging activities. He expressed confidence that the institute would produce a skilled workforce capable of contributing both domestically and internationally.
BIWTA, Water Development Board, and various government and private entities are actively involved in river dredging. Hussain noted that the newly established academy would fulfill the demand for trained workers in this field, ensuring a steady supply of skilled manpower.
The institute has introduced 28 courses of varying durations, including training on dredger building. Hussain highlighted the importance of enhancing the institution to meet international standards through collective efforts.
In addition to the training programs, Hussain suggested the development of an emergency ferry terminal at Shimulia, along with the maintenance of the existing river port. He also proposed the establishment of an eco-park in the area to boost tourism.
The opening ceremony was attended by BIWTA Chairman Commodore Arif Ahmed Mustafa, along with district administration and police officers and other BIWTA officials.
