Dhaka: Eminent physician Dr. Zubaida Rahman has underscored the significant role of BNP’s former chairperson, Begum Khaleda Zia, as an ‘indomitable symbol of the progress of democracy’. Dr. Zubaida Rahman, the spouse of Prime Minister Tarique Rahman, made these remarks during the ‘International Women’s Day 2026’ celebration and the ‘Best Indomitable Woman’ award distribution ceremony, where she and her daughter, Barrister Zaima Rahman, were present as special guests.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Dr. Zubaida Rahman paid tribute to the outstanding contributions of Shaheed President Ziaur Rahman, specifically highlighting his pivotal role in establishing multi-party democracy in the country. She emphasized the moral strength of Begum Khaleda Zia, describing her as patient, steadfast, and uncompromising in the face of numerous oppressions and injustices.
Dr. Zubaida Rahman remarked that valuable lessons could be drawn from Begum Zia’s life, particularly concerning women’s determination and leadership courage. She noted that Khaleda Zia consistently demonstrated empathy towards the oppressed people of the country and maintained a strong stance against dictatorship and exploitation.
Describing Begum Zia as a guide for democracy-loving individuals, Dr. Zubaida portrayed her as a mother, a warrior, and a formidable advocate for justice. She echoed a popular United Nations reference by stating, ‘When women move forward . . . a nation moves forward.’
Dr. Zubaida Rahman urged that International Women’s Day 2026 should be a time to renew commitments to creating a society grounded in equality, dignity, and justice. She expressed gratitude to the Ministry of Women and Children Affairs for organizing the event effectively.
The event was presided over by the Minister for Women and Children Affairs, Professor Dr. AZM Zahid Hossain, MP. Other notable speakers included State Minister for Women and Children Affairs Farzana Sharmin, MP, UNDP Bangladesh Resident Representative Stefan Liler, and Director General of the Directorate of Women Affairs, Zeenat Ara.
