Dhaka: Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus today emphasized the necessity of uncovering the mystery behind the 2009 BDR carnage. “We all are looking for the answers. The commission must be successful in probing this incident. This mystery should be unveiled,” he stated during a meeting with the National Independent Investigation Commission on BDR carnage at the State Guest House Jamuna.

According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the commission members met with the Chief Adviser to update him on the progress of their investigation into the incident, as relayed by Chief Adviser’s Deputy Press Secretary Abul Kalam Azad Majumder. Prof Yunus assured the commission of the interim government’s full support, acknowledging the brutal nature of the attack where officers were killed by their own.

The Chief Adviser pointed out the nation’s focus on the commission’s findings, underscoring the importance of revealing the mystery behind the incident. The commission is optimistic about finalizing its report by June, as their investigation advances rapidly.

Commission chief Major General (Retd) ALM Fazlur Rahman explained the challenges in contacting individuals connected to the incident, given the 16-year gap since it occurred. He mentioned ongoing efforts to gather information from abroad in coordination with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, including interviews with those currently incarcerated and individuals residing overseas.

Rahman highlighted the systematic nature of the killings, asserting it was a planned operation. He likened the event to the Plassey tragedy, stressing the need to uncover its origins.

Commission member Major General (Retd) Jahangir Kabir Talukder criticized the lack of accountability and removal of officers following the carnage, attributing it to failures in intelligence, military, and political spheres.

Other commission members present included Brigadier General Md Saidur Rahman, Munshi Alauddin Al Azad, Dr M Akbar Ali, Md Shariful Islam, Shahnewaz Khan Chandan, and ATKM Iqbal. The government established the seven-member commission on December 24, 2024, to reinvestigate the 2009 massacre with a 90-working-day deadline for their probe.
