Dhaka:Bangladesh is initiating a major transformation of its aviation sector with plans to establish a national air connectivity grid and develop four regional airports into international gateways. This initiative aims to turn Dhaka, Chattogram, and Sylhet into integrated passenger and logistics hubs.
According to United News of Bangladesh, these plans are part of the FY2026-27 budget, which seeks to position Bangladesh as a leading aviation hub in South and Southeast Asia by 2034. Improved air connectivity is expected to enhance trade, tourism, cargo movement, and investment.
The plan includes developing Rajshahi, Cox's Bazar, Jashore, and Saidpur airports as international gateways, thereby expanding entry points beyond Dhaka. An integrated digital logistics platform will also be introduced to optimize cargo handling and coordination within the aviation system.
Infrastructure projects are either underway or in preparation to support this initiative. Terminal expansions are occurring at Jashore and Saidpur airports, while development at Cox's Bazar Airport is nearing completion. Efforts are also being made to improve runway capacity at Sylhet and Chattogram airports and prepare the Third Terminal of Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport for full operation.
The Third Terminal is anticipated to significantly boost passenger capacity at the main international gateway and alleviate pressure on existing facilities. A major digital passenger-service upgrade, including free high-speed Wi-Fi, has already been implemented at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport.
The government's strategy also encompasses modernizing passenger services, strengthening cargo-management systems, improving aviation safety, and enhancing digital services.
The development of the four airports as international gateways aims to redistribute international air traffic and provide direct connectivity to regional destinations. These airports are included in the Civil Aviation Authority of Bangladesh's development plans for terminal expansion, runway improvements, and other infrastructure enhancements.
Supporting this expansion, Biman Bangladesh Airlines is undergoing a fleet-expansion program to boost international passenger and cargo capacity. In April, Biman signed a $3.7 billion agreement with Boeing for 14 aircraft and recently added another agreement for 11 additional aircraft. Moreover, a potential purchase of 10 Airbus aircraft is under consideration, which would bring Biman's planned acquisitions to 35 aircraft.
The aviation development plan also emphasizes creating a sustainable and inclusive system, promoting renewable energy, and developing skilled human resources. As part of a broader tourism strategy, the government is formulating an investment roadmap to attract tourists and create employment.
These aviation and tourism initiatives are expected to draw private investment, create jobs, and support economic growth, aiming to increase the tourism sector's contribution to GDP to 6-7 percent.
