Dhaka: Bangladesh will seek cooperation from Malaysia on deep-sea fishing, Chief Adviser’s Press Secretary Shafiqul Alam said today. During his visit to Malaysia, Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus will ask Malaysia to invest in this sector aiming to explore Bangladesh marine potential, he said.

According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Alam revealed this information at a press briefing organized on the Chief Adviser’s visit to Malaysia, at the Foreign Service Academy in Dhaka. Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus is set to embark on a three-day state visit to Malaysia tomorrow at the invitation of Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, accompanied by a high-level delegation.

The Press Secretary stated that Bangladesh currently catches Hilsa and other marine fish within 40 to 50 kilometers of the deep sea, although the country’s maritime boundary extends about 210,000 square kilometers, which is approximately 60,000 square kilometers more than its land area. The Chief Adviser aims to fully utilize the potential of deep-sea fishing.

Alam noted that during a previous visit to Japan, the Chief Adviser sought cooperation from Japan. This time, Professor Yunus will request Malaysia to consider investing in Bangladesh’s deep-sea fishing sector. Additionally, Alam mentioned that Malaysia’s renowned car manufacturer, Proton Holdings, is now investing heavily in electric vehicles, producing a significant number of cars. Bangladesh will extend an invitation to Proton Holdings to invest in the country during the visit.
