Dhaka: In an unusual episode in Bangladesh’s political history, President Mohammed Shahabuddin has become the first in the country to swear in three governments over just three years, marking a period of rapid political transition. The President administered the oath to BNP Chairman Tarique Rahman as the new Prime Minister at a ceremony held at the South Plaza of the Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban on Tuesday afternoon. He also swore in ministers and state ministers of the new cabinet formed under Tarique Rahman’s leadership.
According to United News of Bangladesh, on January 11, 2024, President Shahabuddin had administered the oath to the Awami League government led by Sheikh Hasina following the national election that year. However, the Awami League government fell on August 5, 2024, amid a mass uprising. Just days later, on August 8, 2024, an interim government was formed under the leadership of Nobel Laureate Professor Muhammad Yunus, with President Shahabuddin again administering the oath to the members of this interim administration.
On April 23, 2024, Mohammed Shahabuddin was sworn in as the 22nd President of Bangladesh, setting the stage for his unprecedented role in overseeing the formation of multiple governments within a short span. His tenure has been marked by significant political upheaval and rapid changes in leadership, reflecting the dynamic and often unpredictable nature of Bangladesh’s political landscape.
