Yangon: As expected, the Bangladesh national women’s football team concluded their AFC Women’s Asian Cup 2026 qualifiers campaign by thrashing the lowest-ranked team in the group, Turkmenistan, with an impressive 7-0 victory in their last Group C match at the Thuwunna Stadium in Yangon, Myanmar.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the girls in red and green had already secured a historic berth in the AFC Women’s Asian Cup 2026 final stage following victories against Bahrain and strong contenders Myanmar in their first two group matches. Despite today’s match being a formality for Bangladesh, coach Peter Butler’s team took it seriously, fielding an unchanged XI from the previous matches.
The goal spree began early for Bangladesh, with Sapna Rani opening the score in the 3rd minute. Shamsunnahar quickly doubled the lead in the 6th minute and added another goal in the 13th minute. Monika increased the scoreline to 4-0 in the 16th minute, followed by Ritu Porna scoring the fifth goal in the 17th minute. Tohura Khatun continued the scoring with a sixth goal in the 20th minute, and Ritu Porna, the standout player of the group, completed the tally with her second and Bangladesh’s seventh goal in the 40th minute.
In the second half, Turkmenistan returned to the field in a more organized manner, preventing Bangladesh from further increasing their lead. Earlier in the tournament, Bangladesh had defeated Bahrain 7-0 in the first match and narrowly beat host Myanmar 2-1, thanks to a brace by Ritu Porna Chakma.
Turkmenistan, on the other hand, had suffered an 8-0 defeat to Myanmar in their opening match and drew 2-2 with Bahrain in their second match. The Bangladesh women’s football team is expected to return home early Monday.
