Dhaka: The World Press Freedom Day will be observed tomorrow, focusing on the theme ‘Shaping a Future at Peace: Promoting Press Freedom for Human Rights, Development, and Security’. This annual event, celebrated on May 3, evaluates global press freedom, protects media independence, and honors journalists who have sacrificed their lives for their profession.

According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, World Press Freedom Day was proclaimed by the UN General Assembly in 1993 following a recommendation from UNESCO’s General Conference in 1991. The day serves as a reminder of the critical role a free press plays in maintaining transparency and accountability worldwide.

To commemorate ‘World Press Freedom Day 2026′, the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting will organize a rally and discussion in Dhaka. The events aim to underscore the media’s role in the digital era. The programme will kick off with a rally at 9:00 am, originating from the Officers’ Club premises and concluding at the Tathya Bhaban complex.

A discussion will follow at 9:30 am in the conference room of the Department of Films and Publications at the Tathya Bhaban complex on Circuit House Road. Information and Broadcasting Minister Zahir Uddin Swapon is expected to be the chief guest, with State Minister for Information and Broadcasting Yasser Khan Choudhury attending as a special guest.
