Monaco: The Bangladesh Navy made its presence felt on the global stage as it participated in the 4th Conference of the International Hydrographic Organization (IHO) held in Monaco. The conference, which spanned five days, commenced on April 19 and concluded on Thursday, underscoring Bangladesh’s commitment to maritime governance and hydrographic development.
According to United News of Bangladesh, a delegation from the Bangladesh Navy, led by Rear Admiral Mohammad Musa, played a key role in the conference. As the Assistant Chief of Naval Staff (Operations) and Chairman of both the National Hydrographic Committee and the North Indian Ocean Hydrographic Commission, Rear Admiral Musa’s leadership was pivotal as the delegation engaged in the election process for the IHO’s top leadership positions.
The conference, held every three years, serves as a primary forum for setting strategic directions in global hydrographic activities. This year, it focused on enhancing international standards for nautical charting, accelerating digital transformation, and bolstering the maritime safety framework. Key discussions revolved around transitioning to next-generation hydrographic standards, particularly the S-100 framework, and the integration of advanced technologies like automated survey systems.
The conference also emphasized the significance of hydrographic data sharing, interoperability, and capacity building, especially for coastal states. Bangladesh’s participation reflects its strategic initiatives to boost hydrographic capabilities and develop maritime infrastructure.
In a related development, Bangladesh took on a leadership role as it assumed the chairmanship of the North Indian Ocean Hydrographic Commission for the 2025-2027 term during its 24th meeting held in Bangkok in February 2025. This move positions Bangladesh as a key coordinator of regional hydrographic activities in the North Indian Ocean.
