Colombo: Bangladesh will face off against Sri Lanka in the crucial second game at R Premadasa Stadium in Colombo today. The match, which is pivotal for Bangladesh’s chances in the series, is set to start at 3 PM. A defeat in this match will cost Bangladesh the three-match series, with just one match remaining.

According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Bangladesh’s performance in the first game was marred by a dramatic collapse, as they lost seven wickets for just five runs in 26 balls at the same venue. This unexpected turn of events left both fans and players in disbelief. Fast bowler Taskin Ahmed noted his surprise at the sudden fall of wickets, remarking, “I was chilling in the dressing room with a coffee, and suddenly, five wickets down.”

Bangladesh had been in a strong position, chasing a target of 245, with a score of 100-1 in 16.2 overs before the collapse. The downfall began with the run-out of Najmul Hossain Shanto. Wanindu Hasaranga then took two wickets in his first over, dismissing Liton Das and top-scorer Tanzid Hasan Tamim, who had made a solid 61 off 62 balls. Kamindu Mendis further destabilized the visitors, and Taskin Ahmed mentioned that the dismissal of Tanzid left the team panic-stricken.

Taskin highlighted the importance of improving game awareness for Bangladesh to stay competitive and possibly level the series against Sri Lanka in the second ODI. He emphasized that the team needs to enhance their combined bowling and batting strategies while maintaining a good environment and culture.

Historically, Sri Lanka has been dominant in the ODI format against Bangladesh, winning 44 out of the 58 encounters. Bangladesh’s record on Sri Lankan soil has also been poor, with their last series win against Afghanistan coming last year. Since then, Bangladesh has faced defeats against West Indies, India, and New Zealand.

In response to their current form, Bangladesh may make changes to their playing squad, with Mustafizur Rahman looking uncertain due to cramps in the first match. On the other hand, Sri Lanka, having recently defeated teams like Australia and India, is unlikely to make any changes to their squad.

The outcome of today’s match will be crucial for Bangladesh as they strive to end their seven-match losing streak and keep their series hopes alive.
