Mirpur:Bangladesh captain Najmul Hossain Shanto is determined to maintain the team's recent progress in Test cricket, viewing the upcoming two-match series against the West Indies as a crucial opportunity to move closer to their first World Test Championship (WTC) final.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Shanto emphasized the importance of focusing on each match and session rather than being distracted by the qualification equation. Bangladesh is currently fourth in the WTC standings, with a realistic chance of qualifying for the final, needing to win at least four of their remaining six Tests.
Shanto expressed that the possibility of reaching the WTC final serves as an inspiration rather than a source of pressure. He highlighted the team's thorough preparations and the benefit of early training sessions following the Afghanistan series. Despite acknowledging the West Indies' extensive preparations, Shanto expressed confidence in Bangladesh's readiness.
He also underlined the need for consistency, noting that Bangladesh had underperformed in their last two or three Tests. Shanto remains optimistic about improving team performance by another 20 to 30 percent in the coming days.
Reflecting on past performances, Shanto recalled Bangladesh's victory over Australia in Darwin and their improved play in overseas conditions. However, he expressed disappointment over the drawn Test against Afghanistan, believing Bangladesh should have secured a win. Despite this, he identified positives, particularly the team's determination and commitment in difficult conditions.
Shanto assured that Bangladesh has experienced options in the middle order and pace bowlers ready to play as needed, depending on conditions. Regarding Litton Das's fitness, Shanto mentioned ongoing assessments but remained hopeful about his participation in the series.
