Dhaka:The country's Department of Fisheries has stopped the import of hilsa fish from India, following the cancellation of 103 no-objection certificates (NOCs) previously issued for the trade.
According to United News of Bangladesh, the cancellation was formalized through a letter signed by Acting Director General Dr. Md Khaled Konok of the Department of Fisheries on Tuesday. This action has resulted in the suspension of hilsa imports via the Benapole land port.
Aminul Haque, Vice President of the Benapole Port Import-Exporters Association, confirmed the development, stating that the association received a notification about the cancellation of the NOCs. He noted that the cessation of imports has created challenges for importers.
Hilsa importer Syed Mahidul Haque Rubai expressed concerns over the sudden halt, indicating that it has led to substantial financial losses. Fish already purchased in India for import now need to be returned at lower prices, and additional losses are incurred from related import expenses.
