Dhaka: Election Commissioner Md. Anwarul Islam Sarker announced today that the Awami League will not be permitted to participate in the forthcoming elections. Speaking to reporters during the inauguration of a training session aimed at enhancing police efficiency in election duties at the Election Commissioner District Police Lines, Sarker clarified the legal standing of the Awami League’s activities.

According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Sarker stated, “Legally, the activities of Awami League are suspended. Therefore, they will not be able to participate in the next election.” This decision has been made in accordance with election regulations and follows the suspension of activities of the political party.

In response to questions regarding the electoral symbol of the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP), Sarker emphasized that the symbol is determined by the Constitution and electoral rules. This clarification comes amidst preparations for the upcoming national parliament elections, which are scheduled to occur before the start of Ramadan.

Sarker assured the public that the upcoming elections would be free from controversy, a significant departure from past elections. He underscored the importance of cooperation from all stakeholders to ensure a fair and participatory electoral process.

The Election Commission is taking a firm stance to prevent any controversial figures from being assigned election duties. Sarker expressed confidence in the readiness of all forces involved in the elections and indicated that maintaining law and order would not pose a challenge.
