Dhaka:Algerian Ambassador to Bangladesh Abdelouahab Saidani commemorated the 1961 Paris massacre, emphasizing the shared struggles of Algeria and Bangladesh against oppression and their commitment to independence, justice, and human dignity. He spoke at a commemorative program held at the Algerian Embassy in Dhaka.

According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the ambassador noted that both nations confronted severe colonial and systematic oppression, driven by an unwavering commitment to justice and independence. This history has forged enduring bonds of friendship, solidarity, and mutual respect between the peoples of Algeria and Bangladesh.

The event marked the 65th anniversary of the October 17, 1961, Paris massacre, a significant moment in Algeria's fight for independence from French colonial rule. Saidani paid tribute to the victims, stating that their sacrifices continue to inspire both nations in their pursuit of freedom, peace, and prosperity.

October 17 is observed in Algeria as National Emigration Day to honor the martyrs and recognize the contributions of Algerians living abroad during the liberation struggle. In 2021, Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune introduced an annual minute of silence to commemorate the victims, observed across Algeria and its diplomatic missions.

Referring to the theme "From Deep Memory to Future Horizons," Saidani stressed the importance of preserving historical memory and upholding justice, dignity, and human rights. He recounted how French police violently suppressed peaceful demonstrations by Algerians on October 17, 1961, leaving numerous demonstrators dead and thousands injured, with some reportedly tortured or drowned in the River Seine.

Efforts by historians, activists, and human rights organizations have drawn international attention to the massacre and encouraged France to acknowledge its gravity. The ambassador described the massacre as a lasting symbol of Algeria's resilience and determination to achieve independence.

Saidani also highlighted the contributions of the Algerian diaspora to national development, mentioning the establishment of the High Council of the National Scientific Community Abroad to mobilize expatriate expertise. He expressed hope that the victims' legacy would continue to strengthen solidarity between Algeria and Bangladesh.
