Abu Sayeed’s Legacy Celebrated at Carmichael College’s 108th Anniversary.

Rangpur: Shaheed Abu Sayeed not only sacrificed his life by confronting oppression and striving for national freedom, but also dismantled barriers of discrimination. “In exchange for his life, we today have regained our political, economic, social, cultural, and religious freedom,” Additional Secretary of the Ministry of Education (Secondary and Higher Secondary Education Division) Md Rabiul Islam stated during a discussion and cake-cutting ceremony celebrating the 108th founding anniversary of Carmichael College at its GL Hostel ground.

According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the event was presided over by Professor ABM Rezaul Karim, Director General (additional charge) of the Directorate of Secondary and Higher Education. Professor Md Shafiq Hossain, Convener of the 108th anniversary celebration committee, delivered the welcome speech. Other special guests included Joint Secretary of the Ministry of Education Md Nuruzzaman, Carmichael College Principal Professor Md Mostafizur Rahman, Vice-principal Profe
ssor Dr. Rehena Khatun, Teachers’ Council Secretary Professor Dilip Kumar Roy, and Carmichael College Central Student’s Association’s former General Secretary Rockibus Sultan Manik.

The chief guest emphasized the importance of addressing the crises faced by Carmichael College and maintaining its legacy, inspired by the independence achieved through Abu Sayeed’s sacrifice. He highlighted the need to resolve disparities and fulfill the demands of teachers and students to preserve the college’s historic glory.

Speakers at the event discussed the challenges confronting the institution and offered suggestions for overcoming these issues in the spirit of the July 2024 uprising. The celebration began with the chief guest inaugurating the event by hoisting the national flag, releasing balloons and pigeons, and participating in the ‘Ananda Shobhayatra’ with thousands of teachers and students.

In the afternoon session, Deputy Inspector General of Rangpur Range Police Aminul Islam attended as the chief guest, while R
angpur Metropolitan Police Commissioner Md Majid Ali and Deputy Commissioner Mohammad Rabiul Faisal spoke as special guests. The session featured a cultural program with performances by artists from various cultural organizations, captivating the audience with songs, dances, recitations, debates, and acting.

The Carmichael College campus, established on November 10, 1916, transformed into a vibrant reunion fair, bringing together current and former teachers and students in a day of celebration and reflection on the institution’s storied past.
