Dhaka:Jamaat-e-Islami Secretary General Mia Golam Porwar issued a cautionary statement on Wednesday, warning the ruling Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) against pursuing authoritarian politics. He suggested that if the BNP continued on this path, it could face consequences similar to the ousted Awami League.

According to United News of Bangladesh, Porwar made these remarks during a discussion session organized by Bangladesh Islami Chhatra Shibir at the Jatiya Press Club. The event marked the October 28, 2006 violence in Paltan. Porwar accused the BNP of not upholding the public mandate from the February 12, 2026 election, which he claimed was intended to establish a humane and just Bangladesh. Instead, he alleged that the BNP's actions were obstructing democratic progress.

Porwar described the BNP's approach as "parliamentary fascism," criticizing its stance that no other views should prevail. He also accused the former ruling party, Awami League, of suppressing democracy, conducting controversial elections, and repressing political opponents during its tenure.

He highlighted the July 2024 mass uprising as an opportunity to create a Bangladesh rooted in democracy, justice, and human dignity. Reflecting on the 2006 violence, Porwar acknowledged the sacrifices made by Jamaat and Islami Chhatra Shibir activists in the movement for political change. He claimed that recent electoral successes in student union elections demonstrated growing public support for Islamic politics.

The commemoration of October 28 is significant for Jamaat and Islami Chhatra Shibir, as violent clashes on that day between activists of the Awami League-led and BNP-Jamaat-led alliances resulted in casualties, symbolizing sacrifice and resistance.
