Accra:Extensive security measures are being implemented across Bangladesh to ensure peaceful and safe celebrations of Sharadiya Durga Puja. Over 212,818 members of Ansar-VDP and 3,400 Bangladesh Coast Guard personnel will be deployed across the country.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the security arrangements include round-the-clock vigilance at puja mandaps and temples, intensified patrols, intelligence monitoring, and digital surveillance. These efforts are part of a coordinated strategy to protect religious sites, safeguard devotees, and ensure the festival is celebrated peacefully.
Ansar-VDP Director General Major General Abdul Motaleb Sazzad Mahmud announced that 212,818 members, consisting of 146,488 men and 66,330 women, will be deployed nationwide from October 15 to 22. Additionally, 624 personnel organized into 104 strike force teams will be on standby for emergencies.
Security personnel will be deployed at three levels based on the importance of individual puja mandaps. Eight Ansar members will guard each of the 6,914 highly important mandaps, while six members each will be assigned to 11,781 important mandaps and 14,470 general-category mandaps.
To enhance monitoring and coordination, Ansar-VDP will utilize the 'Sharadiya Surokkha App' for information collection and rapid response facilitation. Village Defence Party members stationed at puja mandaps will assist in identifying risks and countering rumors.
Major General Mahmud highlighted initiatives to improve the operational capacity of the force through grassroots reforms and modernized training. A college-based VDP training program has also been introduced to equip young people with practical skills for public safety.
Meanwhile, the Bangladesh Coast Guard will deploy 3,400 personnel to protect temples and puja mandaps in coastal and riverine areas starting October 16. The personnel will secure 615 locations across four zones Dhaka, East Zone (Chattogram), West Zone (Mongla), and South Zone (Bhola).
The Coast Guard will intensify patrols and coordinate with local administrations and puja committees to prevent incidents and ensure safety during idol immersion. Special diving teams will be ready for rescue operations, and public awareness campaigns will be conducted to prevent overcrowding on boats. The Coast Guard has urged people to contact its emergency helpline at 16111 for assistance.
