Manila:Inter Miami secured a spot in the Major League Soccer (MLS) playoffs with a 2-0 victory over New York City FC. Lionel Messi played a crucial role by providing an assist during the match.
According to United News of Bangladesh, Rodrigo De Paul scored from Messi's assist, and Germán Berterame also added a goal, ensuring the win for Miami. Luis Suárez contributed an assist, marking the team's first consecutive victories since July.
Despite missing the playoffs when Messi joined in 2023, Miami has made it to the postseason for the past three seasons. They were defeated by Atlanta United in the first round in 2024 but went on to win their first MLS Cup title against Vancouver last year.
The victory against NYCFC came after Miami's 4-0 triumph over DC United, where Messi and Suárez each scored twice. It also marked the second league win for new coach Cristian "Kily" González, who assumed his role on September 16.
Germán Berterame opened the scoring in the 20th minute with his eighth goal of the season, and De Paul extended the lead just before half-time. Goalkeeper Dayne St. Clair saved a penalty from Nicolás Fernández in the final minute, securing his second consecutive clean sheet.
Messi has had an impressive year, leading Argentina to its second consecutive World Cup final and subsequently retiring from international football. Now, he has the chance to add another trophy to his collection with Inter Miami.
