Madaripur:Civil society representatives and journalists have raised concerns over the urgent need to protect Shakuni Lake from pollution, waste dumping, encroachment, and illegal structures.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, a views-sharing meeting took place at the Madaripur District Muktijoddha Command office to discuss the lake's deteriorating condition and explore ways to preserve its environment and heritage.
Once a symbol of beauty in the district town, Shakuni Lake is now threatened by mismanagement and indiscriminate garbage dumping from surrounding business establishments. Speakers at the meeting emphasized that the lake is not just a water body but an integral part of Madaripur's heritage and civic life.
They asserted that protecting the lake is a shared responsibility involving the administration, local businesses, residents, and visitors. The need to stop indiscriminate waste disposal, ensure proper waste management, and take action against encroachment and illegal construction was highlighted.
Participants also called for regular cleaning drives, installation of adequate dustbins, awareness-raising signboards, and stronger enforcement of environmental regulations. They urged relevant authorities to take a proactive role in preserving the water body through practical and sustained initiatives.
The meeting was attended by Madaripur District Muktijoddha Commander Habibul Alam, freedom fighter and physician Dr. Golam Sarwar, Madaripur Sachetan Nagarik Committee President Khan Mohammad Shahid, Madaripur Press Club General Secretary Belal Rizvi, Advocate Mashiur Rahman Parvez, along with other civil society representatives and journalists.
