Panchagarh:Police have taken Naimuzzaman Bhuiyan Mukta, a former Member of Parliament (MP) from the Panchagarh-1 constituency, into custody in connection with a case involving the enforced disappearance and murder of rickshaw puller Al Amin.

According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Mukta was apprehended at his residence in the Kazipara Milon Bazar area of Panchagarh Sadar Upazila. His arrest followed a police raid conducted after receiving a tip-off about his location.

Ashish Kumar Shil, Inspector (Investigation) of Panchagarh Sadar Thana, confirmed the arrest. Mukta was subsequently brought before the court, where legal proceedings were initiated, and the court ordered his detention.

Police reports indicate that Mukta, who also holds the position of Vice-President in the district unit of the banned Awami League, was presented at the Panchagarh court at around 8:30 am. The court proceedings were conducted under heightened security measures.

The case against Mukta stems from an incident on August 5, 2024, when Al Amin disappeared after joining an anti-discrimination student-mass movement. On September 10 of the same year, Al Amin's father, Monu Mia, filed a case at Panchagarh Sadar Thana, accusing Mukta and others of enforced disappearance and murder. The case implicates 19 individuals, including former Railway Minister Nurul Islam Sujan, along with 150 unidentified persons.

In addition to this case, Mukta faces 12 other charges, including vandalism and arson related to the BNP office. He was elected as an MP in the 12th National Parliamentary Election in 2024 with an Awami League nomination for the Panchagarh-1 (Sadar-Tetulia-Atwari) constituency.
