Dhaka:A court has sentenced three individuals to death for the murder of garment worker Saimon at the Martyred Intellectuals Memorial in Mirpur, the capital's district.

According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the death-row convicts are Md Eusuf, Ikbal Khan, and Mehedi Hasan. Judge Jahidul Islam of the Dhaka 13th Additional Metropolitan Sessions Judge Court delivered the verdict in their presence and subsequently sent them back to jail with a conviction warrant. Additionally, another individual, Sujon, received a three-year jail sentence.

The case documents reveal that on October 11, 2022, Saimon was shopping in Mirpur-1 with colleagues Rifat Hossain Rabbi and Hridoy Hasan. Around 9 pm, as they were heading home, three unidentified muggers intercepted Saimon and Rifat near Aarong Shopping Centre. The attackers falsely accused Saimon of assaulting one of their younger brothers and took the two by rickshaw to the Kanchabazar area via Konabari, under Darus Salam Police Station, releasing Rifat there while taking Saimon to the Martyred Intellectuals Memorial.

Threatening Saimon with knives, the muggers demanded his money and belongings. When Saimon resisted, they stabbed him, took his phone and money, and fled. Locals rushed Saimon to the National Institute of Traumatology and Orthopaedic Rehabilitation (NITOR), where he was declared dead by doctors.

Saimon's father, Shajahan Sheikh, filed a murder case with Darus Salam Police Station against unidentified persons following the incident. Sub-Inspector Sohan Ahmed submitted a charge sheet against the accused on January 31, 2023. The court framed charges on August 2, 2023, and during the trial, 18 witnesses testified.
