Arusha:Bangladesh's Barrister Jahrat Adib Chowdhury, MP, has been elected to the Executive Committee of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU), enhancing Bangladesh's influence in the global parliamentary body.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Chowdhury, who chairs the Parliamentary Standing Committee on the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, won a majority of votes during the election at the 153rd IPU Assembly in Arusha, Tanzania.
She was chosen as a representative from the Asia-Pacific Geopolitical Group, with 37 member countries participating in the election process.
The foreign ministry hailed the result as a significant achievement for Bangladesh under the current BNP-led government, following the country's recent election to the presidency of the 81st United Nations General Assembly. The ministry stated that the election outcome indicates international confidence in the government's dedication to strengthening parliamentary democracy and is expected to enhance Bangladesh's voice in international parliamentary matters.
The IPU serves as the global organization of national parliaments, promoting democratic governance, peace, sustainable development, parliamentary diplomacy, and cooperation.
A Bangladesh parliamentary delegation, led by Speaker Hafiz Uddin Ahmad Bir Bikram, is in attendance at the assembly.
