Dhaka:State Minister for Foreign Affairs Humaiun Kobir emphasized that Bangladesh's relations with major powers like India, China, Japan, the United States, and the European Union should be guided by balance and clarity, taking into account their distinct opportunities and challenges.

According to United News of Bangladesh, Kobir made these remarks during a speech at the National Defence College (NDC). He highlighted the importance of protecting the rights, dignity, and welfare of Bangladeshi citizens abroad.

Kobir stated that Bangladesh's foreign policy must be confident without being confrontational, open without being dependent, and pragmatic without compromising national interests. He stressed the need for a principled, pragmatic foreign policy firmly rooted in national interest in response to a rapidly changing global environment.

Addressing the NDC course participants, Kobir noted that intensifying geopolitical competition, evolving security challenges, economic vulnerabilities, technological changes, climate change, and transnational threats necessitate a forward-looking foreign policy for Bangladesh.

He clarified that a 'Bangladesh first' policy does not imply isolation but focuses on keeping national interests at the centre of diplomacy. This approach aims to protect sovereignty while expanding partnerships based on mutual respect and benefit. The State Minister also emphasized the importance of stronger regional connectivity, greater economic integration, and practical cooperation with neighboring countries.
