Mirpur:State Minister for Foreign Affairs Humaiun Kobir emphasized the need for Bangladesh to pursue a principled and pragmatic foreign policy that is firmly rooted in the nation's interests. He made these remarks during a course at the National Defence College.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Kobir stated that the country's foreign policy should be confident yet non-confrontational, open but not dependent, and pragmatic without compromising national interests. He clarified that the government's 'Bangladesh First' policy is focused on prioritizing national interests in diplomacy, safeguarding sovereignty, and fostering partnerships based on mutual respect and benefit.
Kobir noted that the rapidly changing global landscape, including geopolitical competition, security challenges, economic vulnerabilities, technological shifts, climate change, and transnational threats, necessitates a strategic approach to foreign policy. He highlighted the importance of stronger regional connectivity, economic integration, and practical cooperation with neighboring countries.
He further explained that Bangladesh's relationships with major powers such as China, India, Japan, the United States, and the European Union should be managed with balance and clarity, recognizing the unique opportunities and challenges each presents. Kobir also stressed the significance of protecting the rights and welfare of Bangladeshi citizens abroad, emphasizing that their interests should remain a key aspect of the country's diplomacy.
Finally, he asserted that a foreign policy centered on national interest would enable Bangladesh to effectively navigate geopolitical changes, safeguard its sovereignty, and enhance opportunities for economic growth and development.
