Uttara:Police arrested three individuals accused of extorting Tk 159,000 from a man in Uttara by allegedly impersonating members of the Directorate General of Forces Intelligence (DGFI).
According to United News of Bangladesh, the arrested individuals are Md Russell Mahbub alias Masum, 42, Sohel Mirza, 41, and Md Sajib, 36. The arrests followed an incident where a police patrol team from Uttara East Police Station responded to a call received through the national emergency service 999. The team visited a flat on the 10th floor of a building on Road No. 3 in Sector 4 around 8 a.m. on Friday.
Police reported that several individuals had threatened the flat owner, Kaiyum Shahriar Zahedi, claiming to be DGFI members and alleging that a case had been filed against him. They demanded Tk 10 lakh to settle the supposed case, leading Zahedi to pay them Tk 159,000 out of fear. Suspecting their activities, Zahedi contacted police assistance.
Upon arrival, police discovered a DGFI identity card in the possession of one of the suspects. During questioning, the suspects confessed to extorting money while posing as DGFI members.
Police recovered several items from the suspects, including a fake DGFI identity card, a motorcycle, Tk 159,000 in cash, a walkie-talkie, and a pair of handcuffs. A case has been filed with Uttara East Police Station, and legal procedures are underway to present the arrestees in court.
