Chattogram:The 'Robi-Drishti Debate Championship 2026,' one of Bangladesh's largest debate competitions, started with a grand opening ceremony at the Theater Institute auditorium in Chattogram.
According to United News of Bangladesh, the event is sponsored by Robi Axiata PLC and features 56 educational institutions, including 32 schools from Chattogram and 24 universities and debating clubs from across the country. The debate festival will run for a week, culminating in the final round and closing ceremony on October 9.
This year's championship marks the 31st Inter-School and 20th Inter-University Debate Competition organized by Drishti Chattogram. Chattogram City Corporation Mayor Dr. Shahadat Hossain inaugurated the event as the chief guest. Notable attendees included Robi Axiata PLC's Chief Corporate and Regulatory Officer Barrister Shahed Alam, corporate personality and songwriter Asif Iqbal, Robi's Senior Cluster Market Director Sheikh Mainul Islam, and General Manager (Sustainability) Mahfuz Sohel Rony.
The opening ceremony was chaired by Drishti Chattogram Founder Masud Bakul and featured speeches by Tournament Committee Chairman Kashfatul Haq Shehjad, Convener Saifuddin Munna, Tournament Director Saber Shah, and former Drishti President Saif Chowdhury. CCC Mayor Dr. Shahadat Hossain emphasized the importance of debate in developing logic, tolerance, and leadership qualities among students.
Barrister Shahed Alam highlighted Robi's 16-year support as a co-organizer, stressing the impact of nurturing human imagination for national progress. Asif Iqbal encouraged youth participation in logical discussions and cultural activities while respecting different opinions.
Masud Bakul acknowledged Drishti's long-standing history in hosting debate competitions and praised Robi's partnership over the years. Senior Drishti Chattogram members, including Shahidul Islam and others involved in the competition's organization, were also present.
Media and Communication Committee Head Mujibul Hoque expressed hope that the event would further enhance Chattogram's rich tradition of debate.
