Dhaka:Both the treasury bench and opposition parties in Bangladesh must act responsibly to ensure the effectiveness, sustainability, and institutionalization of parliamentary democracy, stated Jatiya Sangsad Whip ABM Ashraf Uddin Nizan.

According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Whip Nizan emphasized that Bangladesh's democratic progress is a collective achievement derived from prolonged movements, struggles, and sacrifices by the government, opposition, and citizens. He stressed the importance of avoiding confrontational situations between the government and the opposition.

Nizan acknowledged the opposition's right to conduct political programs but cautioned against activities that lead to prolonged road blockades, arson, widespread disorder, or public panic, which could force the government to impose strict measures. He warned that excessively repressive government actions could also pose a crisis for democracy.

He likened the democratic journey to nurturing a newborn, urging both government and opposition to carefully foster democracy without damaging actions. Nizan noted that resolving longstanding political and administrative issues cannot occur overnight but achieving significant reforms would mark notable progress.

Discussions are ongoing in Parliament regarding the BNP's 31-point reform outline and the July Charter. Nizan called for consensus on strengthening democracy and state institutions, even if all provisions cannot be implemented exactly. He stressed the need to respect political differences while ensuring they do not weaken state institutions.

On political leadership, Nizan stated that nationalism should be reflected in thoughts and actions rather than slogans. He highlighted the firmness of Begum Khaleda Zia and Tarique Rahman on national interest and nationalism.

Discussing democratic practices, Nizan said winning and losing are part of elections and political competition, and state institutions should serve the people, not partisan interests. He called for a new political culture characterized by mutual respect, acceptance of criticism, and prioritization of the national interest to strengthen democracy.
