Lalmonirhat:Disaster Management and Relief Minister Asadul Habib Dulu announced that Maize Square, located in the heart of Lalmonirhat, will serve as a symbol of the district's agricultural achievements, particularly the prominence of maize as a branding crop.

According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the minister highlighted the significant increase in maize cultivation within the district, making it the main cash crop and transforming the lives of local farmers. This development has brought positive changes to the community, as evidenced by the smiles on the farmers' faces.

The naming of the district's central area as Maize Square is intended to emphasize the crop's growing importance to the local economy. Dulu made these remarks during a gathering following the inauguration of the construction work for Maize Square.

The square is planned to feature an iconic architectural design, akin to landmarks such as India Gate in Delhi and Faisal Mosque in Islamabad, aiming to become a symbol of Lalmonirhat.

Minister Dulu also noted the transformation in maize farming over the past three decades, citing Abul Kasem of Hatibandha upazila as an example. Kasem began cultivating maize in 1991 when yields were low, but now all farmers in his village are engaged in maize cultivation due to better yields and prices.

The area's soil suitability for maize has encouraged not only successful farming but also the establishment of small agro-based industries, fostering hope and economic progress in the region.

The event was attended by Lalmonirhat Deputy Commissioner Rashedul Hoque Prodhan, Zilla Parishad Administrator AKM Mominul Haque, as well as other government officials and political leaders.
