Narayanganj:Five female students were injured after coming into contact with an electric wire while playing on the roof of a women's madrasa in Fatullah, Narayanganj, on Saturday evening.
According to United News of Bangladesh, the incident took place at Mahela Khatun Women's Madrasa in Kashipur Hajipara. The students, identified as Lamia, 12, Asia, 8, Sumaiya, 13, Zikri, 12, and Atia, 12, initially received treatment at Narayanganj General (Victoria) Hospital before being transferred to the National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery in Dhaka.
Reports from police and Fire Service sources indicate that the students were playing on the roof of the four-storey madrasa building and had brought sugarcane with them. A 33,000-volt power line runs over the roof, and it is suspected that a piece of sugarcane accidentally touched the line, causing a loud spark and flames.
Madrasa teachers and locals quickly rescued the injured students and took them to the hospital. Dr. Md Morshed Ul Alam Khan of the hospital's emergency department stated that the students arrived around 730 pm and were given painkillers, saline, and oxygen before being transferred to Dhaka. Four of the students have burns on 50 to 60 percent of their bodies and are in critical condition, while the fifth has less severe injuries.
Md Abdul Halim, senior station officer of Fatullah BSCIC Fire and Civil Defence, found sugarcane stalks with leaves on the roof during his inspection. He noted that sparks and fire likely occurred when the sugarcane contacted the high-voltage power line. An explosion was also reported at a gas riser on the ground floor, suspected to be caused by a gas leak triggered by the electrical spark, although no significant damage was observed on the ground floor.
