Dhaka: Newly appointed LGRD and Cooperatives Minister Dr Abdul Moyeen Khan announced that the BNP government will organize local government elections in strict adherence to the constitution. This commitment marks a departure from the practices of previous administrations, with the minister emphasizing the importance of conducting elections that truly reflect the will of the people.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Dr Moyeen Khan addressed the media and heads of various organizations under the ministry at the Bangladesh Secretariat, highlighting the government’s dedication to democratic principles. He criticized the elections held between 2008 and 2024, claiming they did not represent the people’s will. Dr Moyeen Khan assured that the upcoming 2026 elections will be different, with the government prioritizing the mandate given by the people.
Dr Moyeen Khan affirmed that elections will occur at every tier of local government in line with constitutional provisions and government policies. He underscored that only genuine representatives of the people would be elected, ensuring true democratic representation. The minister also emphasized the unique role of his ministry in directly serving the populace, stating that effective governance at the local level is crucial for the country’s overall governance.
Addressing socio-economic disparities, the minister pledged to prioritize the needs of the poor, criticizing past administrations for favoring the wealthy. He highlighted initiatives such as the Family Card and Farmer Card, introduced by Prime Minister Tarique Rahman, as essential tools for supporting disadvantaged communities.
On the issue of corruption, Dr Moyeen Khan asserted the government’s zero-tolerance policy, indicating that the Anti-Corruption Commission would take appropriate action against corrupt practices. He stressed accountability at all levels of government, extending beyond the local government ministry.
In response to criticisms labeling the BNP as a ‘cantonment-based party,’ Dr Moyeen Khan defended the party’s commitment to democracy, attributing the restoration of democracy to Shaheed President Ziaur Rahman. He criticized the previous government for undermining the judicial system, emphasizing the current administration’s dedication to restoring a democratic framework.
State Minister Mir Shahe Alam echoed these sentiments, focusing on addressing past allegations of corruption within the local government ministry. The administration aims to establish transparency and accountability as cornerstones of governance, working towards a more equitable and democratic society.
