Khulna: Speakers at the evaluation and closing ceremony of the National Fisheries Week on Tuesday (today) emphasized that the National Fisheries Week represents a commitment to fulfilling the country’s nutritional and protein requirements. They highlighted the necessity of increasing fish production in accordance with existing laws and regulations to satisfy domestic demand and enhance export earnings. Additionally, they underscored the importance of ensuring safe fish production while maintaining quality standards.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the event took place at the conference room of the divisional office of the Department of Fisheries in the city. The theme of this year’s Fisheries Week is ‘Self-reliant country with silver fish, Bangladesh first.’ The Divisional Director of the Department of Fisheries, Md Jahangir Alam, attended the program as the chief guest, while District Fisheries Officer Md Badruzzaman presided.
Quality Assurance Manager of the Quality Control Laboratory of the Khulna Fisheries Department Md Muktadir Khan, Deputy Director Biplob Kumar Basak, and Senior Assistant Director ATM Taufiq Mahmud also addressed the gathering. They pointed out that fish is a nutritious food consumed worldwide, with consumption methods varying by region.
Approximately 12 percent of Bangladesh’s population relies directly or indirectly on the fisheries sector for their livelihoods, the speakers noted. They explained that fish farming is generating employment opportunities while contributing to nutrition, health, and economic wellbeing.
The speakers advocated for the conservation of natural fisheries resources and the expansion of safe and sustainable fish farming. They also emphasized the importance of proper management of fisheries resources and increasing production to meet nutritional needs, while enhancing safe fish production and exports to bolster the country’s economic self-reliance.
Assistant Director Ujjal Kumar Roy presented a paper evaluating the two-day Fisheries Week. The closing ceremony was attended by fish farmers, fishermen, fish catchers, and other stakeholders.
