Dhaka: Bangladesh has achieved self-sufficiency in meeting its domestic fish demand, and is now focusing on expanding fisheries exports, State Minister for Fisheries and Livestock Sultan Salauddin Tuku said Tuesday.
According to United News of Bangladesh, the state minister highlighted the achievement of full self-sufficiency in the fisheries sector during a discussion as part of National Fisheries Fortnight 2026, organised by the Department of Fisheries at its conference room. The event marked a significant milestone for the country as it shifts its focus towards increasing exports.
Prime Minister Tarique Rahman inaugurated the National Fisheries Fortnight-2026 on Sunday in Kotiadi, Kishoreganj. The event aimed to further strengthen the fisheries sector as part of the government’s goal to build a self-reliant and welfare-oriented nation. The decision to hold the central event outside the capital was strategic, as haor areas significantly contribute to the country’s freshwater fish production.
‘Haors account for a major portion of our freshwater fish supply. Holding the event outside Dhaka enabled us to connect directly with marginal fish farmers, fishermen and local stakeholders,’ Tuku explained. He emphasized the historical contributions of former President Ziaur Rahman and former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia in initiating and expanding development initiatives in the sector.
The state minister acknowledged the ongoing support from Prime Minister Tarique Rahman, who has approved new sector-specific projects aimed at strengthening the rural economy. Tuku also called on public servants to execute their duties with transparency, dedication, and sincerity, underscoring that “power belongs to the people.”
Fisheries and Livestock Secretary Delwar Hossain, speaking as a special guest, urged officials to ensure the delivery of government services without hassle. He stressed that fish farmers and citizens must not face harassment, warning that any negligence would be met with strict accountability.
The programme was chaired by Department of Fisheries Director General Khaled Kanak, who noted that the central event of National Fisheries Fortnight was last held outside Dhaka in 2003. He expressed that this year’s event in Katiadi, Kishoreganj, had invigorated stakeholders and recognized field-level farmers, generating renewed enthusiasm.
The closing ceremony was attended by senior officials of the ministry and Department of Fisheries, sector representatives, and local fish farmers.
