Bagerhat: A total of 80 goats, along with goat food and essential medicines, has been distributed among 20 registered fishermen in Fakirhat Upazila of Bagerhat, with each receiving four goats. This initiative aims to create alternative employment opportunities for the fishermen.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the distribution program was conducted at the Upazila Auditorium premises. It is part of the Native Fish and Snail Conservation and Development Project (1st Revised) for the fiscal year 2025-26. The event was graced by Fakirhat Upazila Executive Officer Md. Roknuz Zaman, Upazila Fisheries Officer Sheikh Asadullah, and other officials from various departments who participated in distributing the goats, food, and medicine.
Speakers at the event highlighted the financial challenges faced by fishing families due to the fishing ban in rivers and water bodies during the fish breeding season. This government support program aims to improve living standards and create alternative income opportunities for these families. They emphasized that goat farming is a viable and accessible venture that can serve as a permanent source of income with proper care.
Beneficiary fishermen expressed their appreciation for the government’s initiative, acknowledging that goat farming would provide an additional income source and aid them in achieving economic self-reliance. The Fisheries Department has indicated that such support programs will continue to ensure the sustainable livelihood of registered fishermen.
