Geneva: Bangladesh and the International Organization for Migration (IOM) have highlighted the vital role of migration as a strategic adaptation mechanism to tackle climate-induced displacement and foster sustainable development. Bangladesh's Ambassador and Permanent Representative to the United Nations Office in Geneva, Nahida Sobhan, led discussions with Amy Pope, Director General of IOM, focusing on the intersection of climate change, migration, and sustainable advancement.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, during the meeting, Sobhan extended her congratulations to Amy Pope on successfully concluding the International Migration Review Forum (IMRF) and the release of the World Migration Report 2026. She conveyed her optimism that both the forum and the report would bolster global initiatives to leverage migration as a driver of sustainable development, especially for Least Developed Countries (LDCs) and nations vulnerable to climate change.
Furthermore, the ambassador reiterated Bangladesh's commitment to contributing to future editions of the World Migration Report, drawing from its experiences in addressing migration-related challenges. The dialogue also explored potential avenues for IOM to enhance support for the welfare and resilience of Rohingyas, also known as Forcibly Displaced Myanmar Nationals (FDMNs), along with their host communities in Bangladesh.
Both sides concurred that with the escalating impacts of climate change, reinforcing international collaboration on migration, resilience, and the safeguarding of human dignity is crucial.
