Cumilla: Fisheries, Livestock and Agriculture Minister Mohammed Amin Ur Rashid today stated that rearing sacrificial animals for Eid-ul-Azha serves as a major income source for marginal farmers and ranchers throughout the country. The minister made these remarks while addressing reporters after inspecting the Neura cattle market in Cumilla Sadar Dakshin upazila ahead of the upcoming Eid-ul-Azha.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the minister highlighted that millions of families benefit financially from this practice, transforming it into a significant industry-driven economic activity. He further noted that Bangladesh is among the largest global congregations for animal sacrifices due to the massive number of animals sacrificed annually. Marginal farmers invest one to two years in raising cattle, goats, sheep, and buffaloes in anticipation of this season, making it a crucial economic lifeline for them.
The minister emphasized the government’s active support for these farmers through training, financial aid, and specialized initiatives to boost farm-based production. These measures have led to a rise in commercial livestock farming, invigorating the agrarian economy.
In response to inquiries about security, health services, and market management, the minister assured that the administration, law enforcement, and the Department of Livestock Services are closely coordinating to monitor markets nationwide. He mentioned that dedicated veterinary teams are deployed at every market to conduct health screenings, provide treatment, and supply medicines for the animals, with livestock officials on hand to assist both buyers and sellers.
Addressing concerns over extortion or mismanagement, the minister confirmed that no major complaints have been reported, and law enforcers remain vigilant. Additionally, fake note detection booths have been established in major markets to prevent fraudulent transactions. The minister reiterated that market supervision will persist until the eve of Eid to ensure a seamless and secure trading environment.
Cumilla City Corporation Administrator Md. Yusuf Molla Tipu, District Livestock Officer Md. Samsul Alam, Sadar Dakshin Upazila Nirbahi Officer Sujan Chandra Roy, and Upazila Livestock Officer Dr. Md. Mahe Alam, along with local political leaders, were present during the visit.
