Dhaka: Information and Broadcasting Minister Zahir Uddin Swapon announced plans for the establishment of an independent mass media commission intended to foster a free media environment in the country. Speaking at the inauguration of a new Bengali daily, “Agamir Somoy,” at a city hotel, Swapon emphasized the importance of consultation with relevant stakeholders in forming the commission.

According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the minister stated that the government is working towards creating a commission with quasi-judicial authority. This body would ensure media freedom and protect the rights and security of journalists. Swapon highlighted a shift in government policy from oversight to enabling an independent media environment, in alignment with party leader Tarique Rahman’s commitments.

The proposed commission aims to safeguard journalists’ professional rights and prevent the misuse of journalistic privileges by media owners or others. Swapon also noted the necessity for the media sector to keep pace with technological advancements, including the challenges posed by artificial intelligence. He expressed optimism that “Agamir Somoy” would contribute positively to the digital and online media landscape.

The event was attended by senior political leaders, editors, and notable citizens. Mostafa Mamun, the editor of “Agamir Somoy,” delivered the welcome address. Among the attendees were BNP standing committee member Abdul Moyeen Khan, Water Resources Minister Shahiduddin Chowdhury Anee, and State Minister for Road Transport and Railways Habibur Rashid Habib. Other speakers included Editors’ Council President Nurul Kabir and economist Prof MM Akash.
