Dhaka: Information and Broadcasting Minister Zahir Uddin Swapon emphasized the importance of embracing the diversity of ethnicity, religions, and languages as a true form of patriotism. Speaking at the ‘Biju, Boisuk, Sangrai, Bisu, and Changkran Post-Festival Reunion and Reception 2026’ at the Chittagong Hill Tracts Complex in the capital, Swapon remarked that those who fail to appreciate this diversity or attempt to create divisions are considered anti-state elements.

According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the minister highlighted that just as every organ of the body is essential, the motherland is formed through a combination of diverse ethnic communities, religions, and language groups. He recalled the contribution of Shaheed President Ziaur Rahman, who established the concept of civic-based nationalism through ‘Bangladeshi nationalism,’ ensuring equal dignity for all citizens irrespective of their language, race, or ethnic identity.

Swapon further mentioned that Prime Minister Tarique Rahman declared equal rights for citizens from both the hills and plains upon returning to the country. He noted that this government declaration will serve as a foundation for future practices of citizens’ rights. Addressing newly elected MPs, Swapon stressed the need for laws and regulations to ensure the participation of all minority ethnic groups in state facilities and opportunities to maintain national unity.

The event was chaired by CHT Welfare Society President Major (retd) Tapan Bikash Chakma. Chittagong Hill Tracts Affairs Minister Dipen Dewan, MPs Abdul Wadud Bhuiyan, Saching Pru Jerry, and Madhabi Marma were honored on the occasion. Prime Minister’s Special Assistant for Hindu, Buddhist, Christian, and Ethnic Affairs, Bijon Kanti Sarkar, was also present. The event concluded with a cultural ceremony.
