Dhaka: Prime Minister Tarique Rahman on Sunday urged police members to take a vow so that no fascist or authoritarian force can further use them against the country and the freedom of its people. Addressing the inauguration ceremony of Police Week-2026 at the Rajarbagh Police Lines in the capital, he also asked them to put in their best efforts to ensure the safety of people’s lives and property.

According to United News of Bangladesh, Rahman emphasized the importance of police in maintaining peace and security, asserting that their actions significantly influence public safety. He recalled the history of the Rajarbagh Police Lines and paid tribute to the police members killed during the Pakistani military’s crackdown on the night of March 25, 1971, under Operation Searchlight.

The Prime Minister highlighted the sacrifices of police personnel and stressed the sacred duty of protecting the country’s independence. He also raised questions about the historical strategy of keeping all police personnel together at the Rajarbagh Police Lines during the turbulent days of March 1971, suggesting it as a potential research subject for historians.

Rahman praised the parade at the event, noting it as a reflection of the discipline and commitment of police members. He acknowledged the Bangladesh Police’s professionalism during the 13th parliamentary election and their commendable role in UN peacekeeping missions.

He expressed gratitude to police and Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) members who participated in the parade and wished success for Police Week-2026. The event featured a spectacular parade commanded by Deputy Commissioner of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police Hasan Mohammad Naser Rikabdar.

The Prime Minister, accompanied by his wife Dr. Zubaida Rahman, also visited the Bangladesh Police Women Welfare Association stall. The ceremony was attended by high-ranking officials, including ministers, lawmakers, diplomats, and senior police officials. Upon his arrival, Rahman was welcomed by Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed, Inspector General of Police Md Ali Hossain Fakir, and Additional IGP AKM Awlad Hossain.
