Dhaka: Cultural Affairs Minister Nitai Roy Chowdhury has emphasized the necessity of promoting healthy cultural practices to combat the nation’s social challenges. He highlighted the urgent need to address the widespread issue of drug abuse, particularly among young people, including school and college students, which he described as a planned conspiracy requiring immediate attention. “In such a situation, no one can remain indifferent. If a locality catches fire, even a temple cannot be saved,” he remarked, underscoring the critical nature of the situation.
According to United News of Bangladesh, the minister made these statements during an event organized by the music institution Sur Saptak at the theatre hall of Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy. He stressed that just as weapons are essential for defense, the country’s rich cultural heritage serves as the strongest tool against negative influences. The Ministry of Cultural Affairs, he assured, is committed to bolstering cultural activities nationwide to confront these challenges effectively.
Further, the minister announced plans for nationwide celebrations of Rabindra Jayanti on May 8, including at Shilaidaha in Kushtia, and Nazrul Jayanti on May 25, including in Trishal, Mymensingh. The event was chaired by Sur Saptak’s founder and noted musician Ferdous Ara, with notable attendees including State Minister for Cultural Affairs Ali Nawaz Mahmud Khayyam, Agriculture Secretary Rafiqul E Mohamed, UCB Managing Director and CEO Mohammad Mamdudur Rashid, and SMC Managing Director Taslim Uddin Khan.
