Dhaka: Kazi Emdadul Hoque, a prominent researcher, author, and former tax commissioner, has been appointed as the Director General of the Bangladesh Standards and Testing Institution (BSTI).
According to United News of Bangladesh, Hoque, a seasoned official of the 7th batch of the BCS (Tax) cadre, assumed his new role on Sunday, May 3. His appointment is on a contractual basis, equating to the rank and status of a Senior Secretary to the government.
Hoque takes over the national standards body after a distinguished three-decade career in the country’s revenue administration. He has previously held significant roles such as President of the Taxes Appellate Tribunal and Commissioner of Taxes at the National Board of Revenue (NBR), where he contributed significantly to strengthening the nation’s economic and administrative frameworks.
Since his entry into the civil service in 1988, Hoque has held various high-level positions, including a notable tenure as Additional Commissioner at the Large Taxpayers Unit (LTU). Internationally, he has represented Bangladesh in negotiations on global tax policies and Double Taxation Avoidance Agreements (DTAA). Additionally, he served as Private Secretary to the Minister for Posts and Telecommunications from 2001 to 2004.
In academia, Hoque excelled by securing first-class-first honors in his Master’s from the Department of Soil, Water, and Environment at the University of Dhaka. During his university years, he was a two-time champion in literary competitions and actively participated in national television debates.
Outside of his administrative career, Hoque is recognized as a literary figure and researcher. His book ‘Kalo Taka’ (Black Money) is widely discussed in academic circles. He has also been a familiar television presence, hosting programs focused on income tax to enhance public awareness.
BSTI officials anticipate that his combination of administrative expertise and creative insight will significantly advance the institution’s mission of ensuring product quality and national standards.
