Gautama Buddha’s Teachings Highly Relevant in Today’s World: Zahid

Dhaka: Social Welfare and Women and Children Affairs Minister A.Z.M. Zahid Hossain today emphasized the continuing relevance of Gautama Buddha’s teachings in contemporary society. He highlighted the importance of the core philosophy of Buddha’s life, which advocates coexistence through non-violence, equality, friendship, compassion, and empathy. The minister suggested that embracing these principles could potentially eradicate war, conflict, and unrest globally.



According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Minister Zahid delivered these remarks as the chief guest at a symposium titled “United Nations Vesak Day-2026 and Buddhism and World Peace.” The event took place at the Bishuddhananda-Shuddhananda Auditorium of Basabo Dharmarajika Buddhist Mahavihara in the capital. Organized by the Bangladesh Regional Centre of the World Fellowship of Buddhists and the Bangladesh Bouddha Kristi Prachar Sangha, the symposium marked the holy Buddha Purnima, enriched with triple sacred memories.



Zahid also acknowledged Bangladesh’s history of religious harmony, where followers of Buddhism, Hinduism, Islam, Christianity, and other faiths have coexisted peacefully. He reiterated the government’s commitment to fostering an environment where all citizens can live in peace and security, irrespective of political affiliation, religion, or caste.



The event was presided over by Sree Saddhammasasanadhwaja Buddhapriya Mahathera, President of Bangladesh Bouddha Kristi Prachar Sangha. State Minister for Railways and Road Transport and Highways Division Habibur Rashid inaugurated the symposium. Prime Minister’s Special Assistant Bijon Kanti Sarkar and Vatican Ambassador to Bangladesh Archbishop Kevin Stuart Randall attended as special guests.
