London: The government has withdrawn Bangladesh High Commissioner to the United Kingdom, Abida Islam, following accusations of not serving the interests of the Bangladeshi community and causing division through her actions. Prime Minister’s Adviser on Foreign Affairs, Humaiun Kobir, who is visiting London, informed reporters on Saturday of the decision to remove her from the post.

According to United News of Bangladesh, Adviser Kobir claimed that Abida Islam did not prioritize the community’s interests and kept the High Commission aligned with the Awami League. Her removal is seen as a response to these allegations.

In related developments, Foreign Minister Dr. Khalilur Rahman is also in London for the 26th Commonwealth Foreign Affairs Ministers Meeting at Lancaster House, scheduled for March. The event is regarded as an opportunity for Bangladesh to seek support for its UN General Assembly Presidency candidature. Adviser Humaiun Kobir is accompanying the foreign minister on this visit.

Abida Islam officially took office as High Commissioner Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to the UK on January 27, 2025. A career diplomat, she has contributed to strengthening Bangladesh’s foreign relations, particularly with Southeast Asia, the Americas, and globally, as noted in her professional profile.

Her diplomatic career includes significant postings in London, Colombo, Brussels, and Kolkata, where she served as the Deputy High Commissioner and Head of Mission. Notably, she was instrumental in fostering Bangladesh’s ties with the West Bengal region of India. As Director General, she oversaw the International Organisations Wing and the Americas Area within the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

During her tenure as Ambassador to South Korea, she worked to enhance Bangladesh-South Korea relations in trade, investment, and cultural exchange.
