Dhaka: Power, Energy and Mineral Resources Minister Iqbal Hassan Mahmood today assured the nation that the country has a sufficient reserve of fuel, addressing concerns that have arisen due to the global energy situation. Speaking at a meeting organized by the Uttaranchal Students’ Forum at Jatiya Press Club, Hassan emphasized that the government has implemented fuel rationing as a precautionary measure amidst the ongoing global uncertainties.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Hassan highlighted that the war situation in the Middle East has created instability in the global energy market, prompting a cautious approach from the government. “There is no fuel crisis,” he stated, clarifying that the rationing is intended to ensure the stored oil is used economically. The minister acknowledged the potential risks to supply systems if conflicts escalate in petroleum-exporting countries to Bangladesh.
Hassan further noted that oil supplies are being bolstered with the arrival of several oil tankers. He confirmed the docking of an oil ship earlier today and anticipated the arrival of another, which will enhance the country’s stockpile. Despite visible long lines at petrol stations in certain areas, he urged citizens not to panic or hoard oil, assuring that the government has no immediate plans to raise oil prices.
On the topic of power supply, Hassan mentioned that the government has issued special directives to prevent load shedding during the Ramadan month, particularly during Iftar, Tarawih, and Sehri. He underscored the government’s need for public cooperation to overcome the challenges inherited upon assuming power, including a significant financial deficit.
The event was attended by notable figures such as Amirul Islam Alim, Prime Minister’s Additional Press Secretary Atiqur Rahman Rumon, Deputy Press Secretary Zahidul Islam Roni, former Chhatra Dal President Khokon, and the forum’s acting president Farzana Akhter Rimi. The minister called for conscious energy use among citizens and advised against heeding unfounded rumors.
