Dhaka: With bustling preparations and an atmosphere of anticipation, the port city of Chattogram is all set to welcome BNP Chairman Tarique Rahman, who will address a grand rally at the historic Polo Ground tomorrow morning.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the event marks Rahman’s first visit to Chattogram after his return from long exile and his second visit in over two decades since his campaign in May 2005.
The city has been transformed into a vibrant hub of political activity, with continuous publicity through loudspeakers, colorful banners, and welcome processions organized by ward units. A series of review meetings by party leaders and workers have ensured last-minute preparations are in place. The Chattogram Metropolitan Police (CMP) has implemented special restrictions to maintain public order, including a ban on unauthorized drone flying.
The Railway Polo Ground field is ready, featuring a massive stage for the event. Central and local leaders have inspected the preparations, giving directives to ensure everything is set for the rally. Security measures include three-tier bamboo barricades around the podium and around 300 microphones to cover the venue and surrounding areas. Law enforcement and intelligence personnel have increased their presence and surveillance.
The BNP and its affiliates are in high spirits, and the city is decked with posters, banners, and festoons at key locations. The BNP is optimistic about a turnout of at least 1.5 million people, aiming to surpass previous records. City Mayor Dr. Shahadat Hossain, overseeing the arrangements, assured that preparations for a smooth and peaceful rally are nearly complete. Separate areas have been designated for women, media, and party workers.
Tarique Rahman is scheduled to arrive in Chattogram by plane at 7:35 pm on Saturday and will stay at the Radisson Blu Hotel. He will meet local party leaders and candidates for 16 constituencies. The next morning, he will participate in a “Youth Policy Talk” program at the hotel, engaging with about 150 students and young people. Following the rally, he will visit Feni, Cumilla, and Narayanganj for election meetings.
Discussions between City BNP leaders and the CMP Commissioner have led to assurances of full cooperation from the police. CMP Commissioner Hasib Aziz has issued a public notice emphasizing the need to maintain public order and security, banning weapons and unauthorized drone flights. Legal action will be taken against non-compliance.
City BNP President Ershad Ullah expressed hopes for a record-breaking turnout at the rally, highlighting the significance of the Polo Ground for the BNP and the eagerness of Chattogram’s people to hear from their new chairman. Nazimur Rahman, member secretary of Chattogram City BNP, also anticipates a huge gathering, expecting participation from both party members and the general public.
